Algeria is expected to count a million orphans by 2030 compared to the current number estimated at 75,000, according to former minister of statistics Bachir Msitpha.
“Chronic diseases and traffic accidents are on the rise. This means the number of orphans will increase as well. There are almost 250,000 widows in Algeria,” said the former minister.
“An employment-based economic approach should be created using orphans’ money which will be collected by associations,” he added.
He called for setting up a “bank for orphans” as part of a vision to create a charity institution for orphans.
The bank would transfer donated money, aid and the State’s grants into investment projects.
