Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League Minister, Abdelkader Messahel, welcomed on Friday, the decision of the European Court of Justice, which confirms that “The agreement between the EU and Morocco is applicable in Western Sahara”, as he commented on the decision, saying, “It indicates Algeria’s right position, which it has always defended”.

Minister Messahel said in an interview with the Algerian news agency “APS”: “Western Sahara issue is about decolonization and this region is not independent and the people have the right to self-determination”.

“Decision of the European Court of Justice comes in conformity with the principles of the United Nations in the field of decolonization, and came to reinforce the force of the law on the law of force”.

“Algeria believes in the United Nations and its new Secretary General, hoping that it will take this decision into consideration, which would allow the launch of a new dynamic on the path of decolonization of Western Sahara”.

Regarding the upcoming African summit, that will be held in the Ethiopian capital, at the end of January, and the developments that are related to Morocco’s request to join the African Union, Messahel asserted: “Algeria will go to the summit with all tranquility and vigilance”.

“Accession of any new country to the African Union requires submission to certain standards and rules that govern the continental organization, and to comply with its Constituent Assembly, and respect the political rights of the Member States”.

As for the vigilance of Algeria, he said; “There are hidden agendas that aimed at dividing and weakening the African continent”, noting that Africa is an emerging continent and will have no weight unless it stayed unified and solid, especially after the failed attempts during the last Africa-Arab World summit”.
