Adel Al Djazaeiri : former detainee tells about calvary in Guantanamo

The former Guantanamo detainee Adel Al Djazaeiri broke the silence three months after his release and revealed to Echourok from his native town Bechar, southern Algeria, a lot of secrets surrounding his personality. His tragic story was heard by kings, presidents and even football stars across the world that offered him and his family gifts and mediated for his liberation.

  • Adel has indicated to Echourok that some billed him as a rebel while some US intelligence experts qualified him as a sensitive man, but he wanted to give exclusively to Echourok his own version of facts though many are hard to believe by some.
  • This is how the Afghan President intervened to release me
  • Adel, who left Algeria in 1986 at the age of 6, has revealed to Echourok that his detention in Guantanamo raised the interest of several Arab kings and Presidents alike that he said “some of them tried to hard to release me from the camp including the Moroccan king Mohammed VI, the Afghan president Hamed Karazai and the Jordan king Abdellah.
  • Those kings and presidents forwarded list comprising names of prisoners asking for their release. They have called on the phone then- US president George Bush in 2004 but this one declined to fulfil their requests arguing that the issue was beyond his competence, but he accepted to please them by freeing some Moroccan, Jordanian and nearly 35 Afghan prisoners. Adel has indicated that he was counted out because he was allegedly linked to other cases in Pakistan preventing the US president to interfere in order not to lose his allies in this country.
  • But he acknowledged that since his name was added to the list of the prisoners to be released, his situation inside the camp has improved “ The moral and physical torture that were implemented on me since my imprisonment have ceased”.
  • I received gifts from kings and presidents… even from Zidane
  •
  • Adel Al Djazaeiri has indicated that in addition to the interventions of several leaders to release him, he has several gifts among the most valuable those sent by the Jordanian ruling family and football stars including the legend Zine Eddine Zidane.
