Algeria: 1,200 municipal workers to start open strike on Monday
More than 1,200 municipal workers are expected to go on an open strike on Monday as authorities did not satisfy their demands, the National Council of Municipalities said in a release.
- “In view of the repeating promises of the interior ministry which were not kept regarding the promulgation of municpla workers’ statute and compensation system starting from January 1st, 2008, the council decided to resume the open strike on Monday,” said the release.
- This strike comes after a series of protests starting from March 30th, 2010 and April 26th, 2010 and until April 10th, 2011.
- The workers asked for union freedoms and their rights in joining independent unions. They also protested against dismissals among union activists, anarchical arrests, continuous threats, regression of the purchasing power and bad working conditions.
- The protesters ask for integrating all the temporary workers and dismissed union activists. They also ask for opening door to dialogue on local and central level.
