Algeria : 2-day-national strike in education sector as from April 13th

The national union of the education and training workers decided to join the strike call launched earlier this week by the autonomous civil service inter union ( IAFP ) for a 2-day national work stoppage starting from April 13th.

According to a union’s spokesman the upcoming work stoppage in the education sector is a response to the government’s dogged refusal to address the civil servant’s bona-fide claims.

The IAFP demands, first of all, a significant hike in the civil servant’s salaries notably through the rescinding of article 87 with an appropriate index-linking to the purchasing power.

Among other urgent claims, the union also calls for the creation of new budgetary posts for contract teachers and trainers as part of a dignified retirement scheme tallying with the purchasing power of the workers.

It also urged the government to open a “serious and responsible” dialogue with the autonomous trade unions.
