Algeria climbs to 15th slot in Fifa world rankings

Algeria have climbed to their highest ever position in Fifa’s world rankings after being placed 15th on the global list for October.

The Desert Foxes of Algeria, who in June took over from Ivory Coast as the top-ranked team in Africa, moved up five places.

Cape Verde also made good gains, rising eight places globally and three places on the continental list.

But the biggest rise came from Togo, who rocketed 73 places and crept into Africa’s top 10.

Algeria remains Africa’s leading light as they continue on their upward curve after the 2014 World Cup. The Algeria football side rose five places in the FIFA rankings to 15th overall, the highest they have ever been ranked on the table.

The Desert Foxes’ climb comes with them being the only country to have won all four of their 2015 African Nations’ Cup qualifiers. They are already guaranteed a place at next year’s continental championship, and as things stand, they seem to be a strong candidate to challenge for the much-coveted African title.

The news was not so good for another African football team that performed admirably at the most recent African Nations’ Cup in 2013. Burkina Faso were a surprise finalist in South Africa but have tumbled 23 places to 71^st, sending them out of the top 65 for the first time since 2012. The Stallions will be aggrieved with their hapless drop due to lack of good performance lately.
