Algeria counts one HIV case every ten hours: FORAM

Experts and specialists in epidemiology warn of « Aids » danger and call for an urgent activation of a national plan to protect from it in light of its spread, as Algerian hospitals discover a lot of new cases of HIV killer virus every ten hours.

HIV cases reach 600 in Algeria, and reports of the WHO confirm that every case represents nine others, which are not yet discovered, thing which may double HIV cases in Algeria to frightening figures.

Head of the Algerian Association for Health Promotion and Development of Research “FORAM”, Mostafa Khayati, said on Monday, during the sensitizing day oriented for Imams and preachers about HIV that Algeria records one case every ten hours, 600 cases during the first nine month of 2010.

“These figures are dangerous because the WHO asserted that each discovered HIV case matches nine sleeping cases, thing which confirms that fact that the number of HIV cases in Algeria exceeds 5400 at least since the beginning of 2010”, he adds.

“FORAM starts the organization of a week for sensitization on the protection from HIV and begins with preachers who have the power of persuasion and influence in a large number of people. The campaign will also reach some university hospitals”.

For its part, “Anis” Anti- HIV association will start a national campaign to protect women and children from AIDS in Algeria.

“ It aims to sensitize women and children about everything related to HIV and to mobilize material and moral support to fight the spread of AIDS, as well as improve conditions of treatment. Official figures in Algeria show that 4745 citizens infected with HIV virus and 1118 suffer from AIDS. Figures may reach 30.000 ingfected”, Head of Anis association Mr. Skander Soufi said.
