Ban Ki Moon, the UN Secretary General

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon Sunday said he assigned his envoy to Western Sahara Christopher Ross to resume his political tours to reactivate talks.

Algeria News Agency (APS) quoted Ban Ki Moon, saying he asked Ross to resume his political tours to pave the way for talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front.

No real progress was achieved over the Sahrawi conflict. Talks were supposed to come up with a fair political solution accepted by everyone, Ban Ki Moon told a press conference in Algeria.

He express sadness over the situation of Sahrawi people, describing it as a “human tragedy.”

“The world can not continue neglecting the Sahrawi people who hope to be supported by the region, the UN and the international community. We have to do something,” he said.

He announced that he will call for a meeting for donor nations to collect money to meet Sahrawi refugees’ needs.

Earlier on Saturday, the UN Secretary General paid a visit to Algeria as part of a tour in the region. He visited Mauritania, Sahrawi refugees’ camps in Semara and Bir Lahlou.

The visit came at the same time with he 40th anniversary of the creation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
