A study prepared by French experts, show that the quality of French wheat and the limited nutritional value, makes the demand for it decrease in global markets, but the imported wheat from the former colony, is almost the sole source to supply the national market with this widely consumed product.

Laboratory analysis, estimated the proportion of protein in the French wheat by 11.6 %, which is a very small proportion compared with wheat, which comes from the Black Sea (Ukraine and Russia), however its prices remain high in view of its nutritional value, according the newspaper “The L’est Eclair” of the General Assembly of the French Grain Producers.

Algeria imports 5 million tons annually of wheat with both types, hard and soft to cover its needs of food which is 3.8 million tons, equivalent to 80% of its needs from French wheat, indifferent with the limited quality and nutritional value, and with uncompetitive prices compared to its advantages, at the time the traditional partners of France such as Morocco and Egypt, sober up to this fact and started looking for other sources that are more competitive, such as grains originating from Russia and Ukraine.

It is noteworthy that Francois Gatal, Director of “France Export Cereales”, as reported by the newspaper, said that some of the items contained in the book of conditions between the Algerian National Professional Office of Grains, in his capacity as the official side concerned with importing grain, gives priority to the French wheat, at the expense of wheat originating from the Black Sea (Russia, Ukraine), despite the difference in nutritional value, which is contrasting with the rules of the market.
