Algeria second globally in drugs' seizure

Commander of the second region of National Gendarmerie, Brigadier General, Othmani Taher, held a National Forum about smuggling and its impact on the economic and social situation of the Algerian society, that was hosted by the University of Aboubakar Belkaid in Tlemcen, in the presence of the Wilaya’s governor, senior commanders of the National Gendarmerie, specialists, actors in the field and university professors.
Brigadier Othmani Taher said; “Phenomenon of smuggling took very serious dimensions, as there is a close relationship between terrorism and trafficking, which have become two sides of one crime. Smuggling is the most serious cross-border phenomena that is experiencing significant rise because of economic,social and security problems, and this in the vast area of Algeria”.
“Figures that are registered at the level of security services are dangerous in the area of drug cases in Algeria during the last four years (14160) during which 22547 were arrested and 297174.4 kg of cannabis were seized, including 22 263 men and 284 women, as the unemployed class comes in the forefront of those involved in smuggling cases, representing 42%, and those with an average level of education by 61%. Algeria ranks second in the world regarding the amount of the seized drugs.
