Algeria sets retirement age at 60

Algeria’s Senate Wednesday broke the record by passing three legal texts during one session. Laws on retirement, martial status, senior positions, small and medium-sized enterprises were passed.

Senators unanimously passed a law to determine retirement minimum age at 60 years old for men and 55 years old for women. It will come into force on January 1st, 2017.

Work minister Mohamed Ghazi said the Retirement Law will solve the problem of deficit at the Retirement National Fund. 

“People who had applied for early retirement will benefit from this procedure in the beginning of January 2017,” he told Senators.

Speaking about unpaid contributions by employers, the minister said the situation will be examined and settled with “positive effects including social security-related rights and advantages.”

Earlier, a commission was established by the Algerian Central Union. It includes a group of experts. It is supposed to release a list of hard professions which will exclude workers from the retirement legal age. They will be allowed to retire before reaching this age.
