Algeria starts importing 4,000 tons of frozen meat from India

Algeria will import meat from India after 8 years of absolute reject from health authorities for some precautions on veterinary conditions, said chief of boards of board of directors.

  • « The Algerian government chose to deal with India’s market to import frozen red meat for a set of technical and healthy considerations,” said Zfizef Djahid Abdelouahab.

  • « India is now a world pole to export halal meat with its good quality and high healthy conditions,” he added.

  • Chief of directors’ board of the company for meat transformation and conditioning (sotracov) also said India has a one of the biggest veterinary research institutes in the world and more than 47,000 veterinary surgeons accredited at health control institutions.

  • “Because of that, the Algerian government decided to import meat from India which exports meat to 64 countries including Saudi Arabia, the Arab United Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt and Malaysia.”

  • Zefzif said the government set specifications including severe clauses on technical and financial conditions of any importing operation.

  • An Algerian health veterinary technical team is in India to check whether the animals are in conformity to the specifications in terms of age, weight and health conformity. They will also supervise slaughterhouses to check if they conduct the operation according to the Islamic sharia.

  • Sotracov will import 4,000 tons of meat as a preliminary quantity at $3,000 per ton. This quantity is expected to arrive to Algeria in the first week of August while the other quantities will arrive successively during the first days of the fasting month of Ramadan.

  • Zfizef said Sotracov will work with the government to rebuild a national network of whole sale and retail distribution so that the government will regulate the national market of large consumption including meat and principal vegetables.
