Algeria supports Libya illegal migration proposal

Algeria accepted Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi’s proposal to give $5 billion a year to his country and North African countries like Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia to fight illegal immigration in the Mediterranean, Echorouk has learnt.

• “The government did not accept the proposed sum as it is huge but it said it is for the proposal about holding the European Union’s countries responsible for financial support,” said the same sources.
• “Algeria bears huge expenses as part of the fight against illegal immigration through detention centres in the south, temporary shelters, expulsions and deportations.”
• The sources did not confirm whether the Algerian foreign ministry and government would work with its Libyan counterpart seriously about the proposal and hold talks with the EU.
• Tunisian government supported the proposal, saying it is serious and needs a deepen study to reach an efficient agreement.
