The prices of red meat in almost all butcheries across the capital Algiers and its surroundings have not gone down at all because of the outbreak of the foot and mouth disease now affecting livestock in 20 wilayas or provinces of the country.

Despite assurances by the Algerian consumers’ association that the meat prices will be curtailed as a result of this spreading infectious disease, the situation on the market is still characterized by high prices averaging 850 dinars a kg of red meat.

Following an investigative assignment mission conducted by Echorouk reports to several slaughter houses in various parts of the capital Algiers, there is no likelihood at the moment that the red meat prices will fall down as a result of the foot and mouth disease just a few weeks before the advent of the Aïd El Adha religious feast.

Several butchers interviewed by Echorouk journalists on the spot said that the meat prices at the slaughter houses in the capital had not decreased owing to this animal disease as expected by many citizens.

They noted however that a slight reduction in red meat prices had been recorded solely in all those border areas where the foot and mouth disease broke out late last July.
