Algeria transfers “food empire” to Bir Touta

Algeria’s Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal gave an instruction to transfer food wholesale market to Bir Touta municipality from Gué de Constantine in Algiers.

Sellal said the market will occupy 30 hectares and administrative procedures were launched this month.

Asked by a member of Parliament, the Prime Minister said authorities chose Bir Touta after many meetings and inspection visits.

“The administrative procedures which precede construction were launched this month. Local authorities are totally ready to support all the initiatives which are part of organizing commercial activities,” he added.

Earlier, rumors were circulated, saying the market will be transferred to the province of Boumerdes. This raised a large controversy and dissatisfaction among traders.

The project is expected to be funded by traders’ money.
