Algeria : Troops of the National popular Army kill 6 Al Qaeda terrorists in Tizi Ouzou province

As part of a large-scale combing operation, now being carried out in mountainous areas of Tizi Ouzou province, 120 km east of Algiers, troops of the National Popular Army have eliminated 6 terrorists and captured 2 others near the Bounamane forest in the municipality of Azzazga.

As part of a large-scale combing operation, now being carried out in mountainous areas of Tizi Ouzou province, 120 km east of Algiers, troops of the National Popular Army have eliminated 6 terrorists and captured 2 others near the Bounamane forest in the municipality of Azzazga.
Acting on reliable information, the ANP soldiers have been tightening their stranglehold on the mountainous region for several days in a bid to dislodge Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorists entrenched there.
The 6 terrorists were shot dead after a sustained exchange of fire with the Army troops who laid an ambush to a group of terrorists who used to move about in the nearby dense forest to perpetrate their horrendous criminal acts in the surrounding areas, notably by setting up fake road-blocks and racketeering local residents.
Security sources said that 8 Kalashnikov assault rifles and other weapons had been retrieved by the Algerian troops who also destroyed several terrorists’ hide-outs where a sizable quantity of foodstuffs, blankets and propaganda documents were discovered.
Forces of the National Popular Army have invested the region with the aerial support of helicopter gunships which relentlessly strafed suspected terrorists’ positions in an attempt to pave the way for the troops’ steady advance.
The surrounded Al Qaeda terrorists are said to be in disarray, seeking desperately to flee the Algerian troops’ heavy fire barrage, but so far to no avail.
To know more about the Army’s ongoing combing operation in the region, Echorouk newspaper has sent a team of seasoned field reporters to the spot to see for itself how things are evolving given the reported successes scored by the ANP troops in their multi-pronged anti-terrorist offensive.
With the help of a local guide who knows every nook and corner of the region, our field reporters were driven on board a taxi to the small locality of Zekri, through the road of Yakouren, for several hours in very tiresome conditions due mostly to the difficult terrain and the heavy fog which was wrapping the mountainous region.
They arrived late at night (10.30) in this small locality which is near the scene of fighting between the ANP soldiers and terrorists hidden in the nearby Bounamane forest and the surrounding mountains.
They spent the night in a ramshackle old house owned by their guide but couldn’t sleep on account of the unabated machine-gun fire and the deafening aerial pounding going on in the remote neighbourhood.
Our reporters were told that the majority of the residents of the Zekri locality had been forced to flee their homes over the past years on account of the manifold criminal acts committed by the GSPC terrorists against the local population.
A war veteran of the glorious November Revolution met on the spot, said in this respect that with the increasing presence of the security forces in the whole region, such heinous terrorist acts have dwindled considerably while expressing the hope that the current combing operations conducted by the ANP troops would be crowned with total success.
