Algeria wants to stop involving Tamazight in politics

A suggestion made by Algeria’s National Liberation Front (FLN) and TAJ party to formalize Tamazight language in the new constitution. This raised questions about reason behind this suggestion.

Former senior member at the FFS party Arezki Ferad said something is happening behind the scene. “I did not know what exactly happened but let me say that the FLN, the RND and TAJ can not meet about formalizing Tamazight.”

“As I am their colleagues at Parliament, I know how the leaders of those parties think. I tried to convince them about some relevant law drafts but they reject them. They said there is a need for a referendum before formalizing Tamazight. That’s wrong because no one in power is convinced about that,” he added.

He believes that the three parties do not have the freedom to take such an initiative. “Because of that, I am sure that the suggestion was upon an instruction from the president. For political considerations, this is meant to exclude those who used Tamazight in a political way.”
