Algeria will response to Morocco’s provocation, says foreign minister
Foreign minister Ramtane Laamamra said Algeria will not keep silent over Moroccan “provoking” remarks, in response to Secretary General of Morocco’s Independent Party.
“President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s speech in Abjua which was read by justice minister reminded of Algeria’s position calling for respecting human rights in Western Sahara,” Laamamra told a joint press
conference with his Colombian counterpart.
“All it seems that this speech raised reaction from Morocco’s news agency. Statements made by the leader of a Moroccan party clearly show expansion covetousness and they are unacceptable at all,” he added.
In his letter to the African conference for solidarity with the Western Sahara issue, President Bouteflika stressed the importance of establishing a mechanism to follow up human rights in Western Sahara “more than ever.”
Earlier on Monday and Tuesday, Morocco news agency criticized Boutefliak’s speech and described it as “the real face of Algeria’s hostile policy towards Morocco.”
The agency said the “Algerian officials who are faithful to their doctrine meant to cause confusion are better than those who called for exploiting human rights pretext in a new hopeless attempt to divert
attention from serious daily violations of those rights in their country.”
Speaking about those “accusations,” Laamamra said he had asked Moroccan “brothers to be wise on October 8th on the Algerian Diplomacy Day.”
“I said we would commit to that wisdom but we did not notice any big signs of that. We hope that we will learn lessons and there would be no other such unacceptable positions,” he added.
