Algerian Border Police Rounded Up 2,500 Dishonest People

The number of passengers crossing border points during this year’s summer season, according to the tally of border police was estimated at about 5 million passengers, an increase of 17.21 percent compared to last year, while more than 2,500 people were arrested on charges of involvement in various crimes, especially fraud and the resort to counterfeiting practices.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the National Police School, “Ali Tounsi”, the Deputy Director of the border police, Brigadier General, Salim Youcef, said that his services recorded a hike in the number of passengers during this year’s summer season, amounting to 4,924,626 passengers.

The total number of people passing through the country’s different border crossings is shared among more than 4 million Algerian passengers and 882 thousand foreigners, and the ratio of air traffic exceeded 49 percent, followed by land border movement by 44 percent, and maritime border movement by a lower rate of 6 percent.

Regarding the border movement with the neighboring Republic of Tunisia, there was an increase in the number of passengers by 36 per cent compared to the previous year. 

The number of passengers crossing into Tunisia this year reached approximately 2.2 million. 

The border police services registered 2.582 Algerian nationals in the process of expulsion, return and withdrawal to the border from outside the national territory,  whereas 1,258 foreigners were barred from entering outside the national territory.

For its part, the border patrol teams recorded 108,000 passengers and 33,000 vehicles during return trips hailing from various European destinations on board Algerian flagship vessels.

In terms of land border traffic, the Algerian border police services monitored 566,623 vehicles, of which 313,800 were national and 252,823 were foreign, compared to 499,610 vehicles during the same period last year, that is an increase of 13 percent.
