Algerian president to release 4 thousand prisoners on the Independence Day

One of the founders of the banned religious party the Islamic Salvation Front ( FIS) , Sheikh Ahmed Sahnouni has yesterday revealed to Echourouk that the President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will pardon most of the Islamic activists on the occasion of the independence day celebration next July 5.

• This presidential measure will not concern those involved in mass killing, rapes and bomb planters in public places and their henchmen, he added.

• In a declaration to Echourouk, Sahnouni has indicated that high- ranking sources at the presidential palace have conformed to him and to Sheikh Zerraoui and Hamideche known “ Abdelfettah, that the President will sign a decree on the occasion of the nearest national holiday.

• Most of the prisoners that will benefit from this decision, he dubbed “ historic”, are those who were imprisoned at the beginning of the 1990s, and the most appropriate date will be the independence day, he added.

• “ we knew about the president’s intent to sign a decree for the release of those prisoners since a while, but the news tends to be conformed day after day”, he said.

• M Sahnouni has asserted that the decision, should be effective, would be a turning point in the course of the national reconciliation process initiated by the president Bouteflika and would sway the reluctant to give up their terrorist activities.
