Social Insurances National Fund reports 60 million medical prescriptions for sickness leave or medicines reimbursement annually. This costs 17,000 billion centimes to the fund treasury.

The fund imposed strict measures as part of a “surveillance plan” to maintain its financial balance. Prescriptions will be verified before reimbursing medicines to insurance employees.

Figures show that medicines reimbursement bill is on the rise. The fund’s officials say some doctors “exaggerate” in prescribing many medicines for simple diseases such as flue and headache. The fund is in charge of reimbursing more than 5,000 medicines. This list is updated every month. A one hundred percent reimbursement is ensured to 26 medicines for patients with chronic diseases.

The fund also plans to provide every pharmacy with a computer connected to an information system.
