Algeria and the majority of Arab countries maintained the last ranks in terms of the quality of education, according to the latest rating of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Algeria ranks 69, in the bottom of the table, after Kosovo and before the Dominican Republic, out of 72 countries that take part in a study about assessing the quality and efficiency of education systems. As Singapore has maintained its rank that is the top of the list.

The survey covered nearly 54.000 pupils, aged 15 years from 72 countries, who were tested and their data was collected in the year 2015 in science, reading, writing and mathematics.

According to the study, Algeria won a total of 376 points in the sciences, 350 points in writing, and 360 points in mathematics.

The report shows that in terms of scientific competence, Algeria has one out of four pupils at least who succeeded in reaching the second level (out of 6 levels), and the same level, was obtained in the evaluation of pupils’ skills in learning and reading.

Same report concluded that Algeria and other countries ranked in the bottom because they are still far from the goal of making all pupils acquire basic skills in reading and writing, which enables them to continue learning and to participate in the life of knowledge-based society.

Regarding mathematics, more than 90% of pupils did not reach the Level 3 in Algeria, and 26% of them wish to pursue a scientific career, and this interest was clear among girls by 29.2¨% more than boys by 23.1%.

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students.

In 2015 over half a million students, representing 28 million 15-year-olds in 72 countries and economies, took the internationally agreed two-hour test. Students were assessed in science, mathematics, reading, collaborative problem solving and financial literacy.
