Algerian Security Services Seized Over 93 Tons Of Drugs During The 10 First Months Of 2016

Algerian Security Services seized more than 93 tons of cannabis in Algeria during the first 10 months of 2016, of which 73.47% were seized west of the country, while more than 31.000 people were arrested on charges of drugs’ consumption and trade, and the cultivation of cannabis, National Office of Combating Drugs and Addiction said.

Based on the outcome of the three security services, which are The National Gendarmerie, the General Directorate for National Security, and Customs, the office explained in its report that 93.052 tons of cannabis were seized during the first 10 months of the current year, of which 68.364 tons were seized in the west of the country, representing 73.47% of the seized quantity, which noticed, during the first 10 months of 2016, a decline by 9.90%, thanks to enhancing the security control at the border level.

According to the same report, 19.21% of the seized quantity was recorded in the south, 5.72% in the central regions and 1.60% in the east.

“Security services seized 2.534 grams of heroin in 20115 compared to 1.370 grams during the first 10 months of 2016, representing a decrease of 45.94% compared to the same period of the previous year”.

“Amount of cocaine that is seized in Algeria decreased by 35.73% and moved from 85.156 grams during the same period of 2015 to 54.732 grams during 2016”.

Same report shows, on the other hand, a very considerable rise in the operations of seizing hallucinogens that have almost doubled, moving from 498.795 to 946.047 during the same period, representing an increase of 89.67%, of which 41.39% were seized in the weste of the country.

“Investigations that were conducted by the concerned departments allowed the arrest of 31.362 people, including 170 foreigners in drug-related cases during the same period of reference explaining that 791 involved people are in escape”.

“Number of involved people increased by 54.20% during the same reference period, out of 6.295 people who are involved in marijuana and hallucinogens trade, of whom 3.311 are dealers, and over 25.186 cases were addressed compared to 15.393 cases during the same period in 2015, with a rise of 63.62%”.
