Algeria’s Ambassador to Brussels: Morocco’s attempt is hopeless
Algiers’ Ambassador to Brussels Amar Blani rejected “baseless and fake” allegations from Morocco’s permanent ambassador to the UN Omar Hilel.
“The Moroccan ambassador’s remarks are no more than baseless allegations. Local press overstated them. It is a hopeless attempt to get Algeria involved in the conflict between Morocco and Western Sahara. The aim is to draw the international community’s attention and disturb the decolonization issue,” Blani said in an interview with a newspaper.
He quoted Melchior Wathelet, an advocate general at the Court of Justice in Brussels, saying European Union agreements on closer ties and trade with Morocco shouldn’t apply to Western Sahara.
This comes as the Moroccan ambassador held Algeria responsible for not appointing him at the Non-Aligned Movement. He said his country withrew in Algeria in 2014 in favour of Ecuador upon a request from Algerian officials.
He also accused Algeria of vetoing against Morocco to prevent it from chairing the political committee.
