Algeria's weather conditions: return to normalcy after three days of chaos
Bad weather claimed 7 lives

Snow storms hit the northern regions of Algeria as well as the interior lands over the last 72 hours causing power outages and material damage in various localities. Eastern Algerian town didn’t witness such cold wave since the seventies according to the inhabitants.

The locality of Bouira (150 km of Algiers ) was one of the most affected one. The death toll rose to 7 including 4 members of the same family perished in a car accident on the route 05 closed to traffic by snow.

Snow was blamed for the closing of the road linking the town of Bouira to Sour Al Ghozlane as well as the portion between Sour Al Ghozlane to M’Sila. Bad weather conditions forced some 150 persons to seek refuge in schools in the town of Bouira .

Other roads have been closed to traffic in the Town of Tizi Ouzou ,(100 km far from Algiers ) as well as the chunk between Tizi Ouzou and Setif passing through Bejaia .

Various other towns have been severely hit by snow causing several traffic perturbations and delays such as the towns of Blida , Setif and Bourdj Bou- Arreridj.

In some parts, snow reached one meter high causing power cuts for some 80 thousand families in the towns like, Bejaia , Tichy, Adakar, in addition to land slide due to heavy rains . Most of the schools in 15 localities have closed and force children to stay home.

In the town of Boumerdes, severely hit by the 2003 earthquake, snow storms and heavy rains caused several property damage, especially on the chalets which have been distributed to the in the aftermath of the sinister.

After a very mild winter, people have brought out again their winter clothes and lit up their heaters as temperatures fell drastically. In some remote places in the town of M’sila , families spent long hours in a total blackout due to power outage caused by heavy snow and violent winds.

Notwithstanding, the damage caused by weather in various regions across the country, people have welcomes the late snow after two months of drought. Weather forecast services expect a return to normalcy as from today.
