Algiers local authorities warn citizens against going on a march called for by a political party

Algiers local authorities have launched a call to the citizens asking them to “ keep watch and a avoid reacting to the intimidations that could breach public order” through the participation in a march”, that didn’t receive permission from the authorities, which some political organisation intend to stage today in the capital city.

  • The communiqué issued by the local authorities, didn’t make reference to the political organization, although everybody knows that the organizer of the march is the Rally for Culture and Democracy party ( RCD).

  • The communiqué has recalled that “marches are not allowed in Algiers” noting, in this respect, that “ Any form of grouping in public places is considered as a public order offence” putting it clear that security forces will not tolerate any infringement.

  • The communiqué has indicated that a political organization has called for a march today starting from the civil reconciliation square, former May 1st square, to the parliament “without prior permission from the local authorities”.

  • To recall, the decision to ban marches an rallies in Algiers came after the march organized by the then –called “ Aarouch” in 2001 that led to tragic event causing several victims among the protesters.
