Algiers’ lawyers voice concern over their professional conditions pending crucial elections

The treasury of Algiers Lawyers’ Union has garnered some 150 million Algerian Dinars collected from the lawyers’ subscriptions, while most of them face tremendous difficulties to carry out their profession in good conditions.

  • This issue will weigh on the balance to determine the winner in the second round of the elections of the lawyers’ president of the bar between the winner in the first round Chaib Seddik and the outgoing Abdelmadjid Sellini in the upcoming few days.

  • The number of the lawyers in the capital city Algiers, is estimated at 5000 while the number of the legal bureaus doesn’t exceed 500, an averaged of 11 lawyers stuffed in a single bureau.
  • The situation has become unbearable for the “men in black” amid growing expenditures they have to for their Union each year.

  • It should be noted that the average amount of the subscriptions is estimated at 6000 Algerian Dinars for the lawyers operating at the justice courts and 11000 Algerian Dinars for those operating at the Supreme Court and the state council.

  • M Chaib Seddik has indicated in a declaration to Echourok that the outgoing president Abdelmadjid Sellini will not be able overcome the hurdles facing the lawyers especially the fresh ones” It’s unthinkable to ask from a fresh lawyer to pay the rent for a to year term contract while he was unable even to collect 50 thousand Algerian Dinars for his swearing- in, how can he pay 500 thousand Algerian Dinars for a rent?”, he said.
