Recent decision of the Ministerial Council raised a big controversy, against the backdrop of official approval from Algeria to start the application of the new law on hydrocarbons in its part that is related to the exploration and exploitation of shale hydrocarbons, to be the first country in the Middle East and North Africa that takes a step of this kind, in light of the availability of Algeria on alternatives that are less strategic and important than the renewable energies like that should be exploited and promoted widely in Algeria, in the context of the transformation of the pattern of consumption, which the country noticed in the recent years.

Professor Abderrahman Mebtoul, said in a statement to Echorouk that this is not about taking a position “with or against” the decision that was taken by the Council of Ministers, but it’s about the exploitation of an opportunity that is not available to many countries of the world, which are the enormous energetic strategies in the field of renewable energies in Algeria, whether in the north or the south, adding that the real challenge is to control the technology to exploit oil and shale gas and also exploitation of renewable sources.
To the present day, Algeria specifically does not know the real capabilities that are available in the area, which prompted the Cabinet to give its approval to drill 11 wells over the coming 13 years, so they can determine the trade capacity of the article by the year 2027, a date which the world will conclude solutions to better technology, that are much inexpensive in both environmental and financial sides.
Figures indicate that the Algerian reserves that are currently exploitable from shale gas are 19.8000 billion m 3, as the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2011 referred to the existence of quantities in the range of 6440 billion m3 of shale gas in Algeria.
Total domestic consumption of natural gas in Algeria in 2012 reached about 29 billion m 3, while the country’s exports from gas continued to decline to 43 billion m 3 in 2013.
