An Israeli firm to secure the 2012 Africa Nations Cup, Algeria embarrassed
Israeli security firm Magal Security Systems Ltd announced it has been awarded a $35.5 million contract to provide security for the 2012 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) holding early next year in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
Such a news has embarrassed some Arab countries competing to qualify to the CAN 2012, including Algeria, given that it does not recognize Israel.
Magal will furnish several sites including airports, hotels, stadiums, and training grounds, with an integrated security system known as Fortis.
A regional control centre will oversee happenings of all the sites from the same place, thus reducing the need for deployment of security personnel, according to the Local Organizing Committee (COCAN).
The announcement of providing such a contract to an Israeli firm reflect the expansion of the Jewish body in Africa, as it has been managed tying relations with 46 African states of the existing 53, since 2003.
The 28th edition of the AFCON is scheduled for January 21 through February 12, 2012, with 16 teams participating.
