Bouteflika carries on reform consultation

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has started a series of consultation meetings with major political personalities, with a view to work out global political reforms in the country.

  • Bouteflika has met with former President Chadli Ben Djadid, former President of the Council of State, Ali Kafi, former Secretary General of the FLN ruling Party, Abdelhamid Mehri  and the Secretary General of the Labor Party Louiza Hanoun.
  • The consultations are set to extend to Political Parties’ leaders and former national personalities and high raking executives as well as war veterans and independent personalities. The process is designed to draft a national agreement on the reforms to come.
  • The reforms are expected to meet opposition and civil society claims in order to avoid dramatic change, similar to the popular uprising that hit Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. The meetings are chaired by President Bouteflika himself with an unrevealed agenda.
  • However the most recurrent issues are to amend the constitution, dissolve parliament and open up audiovisual media.
