Bruce Grobblar to Echorouk: “Goalkeeper Mbolhi is an asset for the Algeria squad
Bruce Grobblar
In an exclusive interview with the newspaper Echorouk, the former Zimbabwean international and famous goalkeeper of the English premier-league squad of Liverpool, Bruce Grobblar, has extolled the Algerian national football team for their remarkable performance in the qualifying round for the Africa cup of nations and the World cup competitions notably for their prowess in the play-off match versus the strong squad of Egypt in Khartoum, a meritorious win, he said, which allowed them to clinch their qualifying ticket for the current world cup tournament in South Africa.
-
Bruce Grobblar who had played with much success about 600 matches with the Liverpool side, suggested that the Algeria line-up could challenge seriously the team of the United States in next Wednesday’s Group C world cup fixture in the light of their brilliant performance displayed on Friday versus England at Green Point stadium of Cape Town.
-
Echorouk : What is your appraisal of the performance made so far by the Algeria squad in the world cup?
-
Grobblar : I have found their performance good so far especially for a team which has been absent from the world cup finals since 1986.
-
This is, in fact, clear evidence of the steady evolution of Algerian football.
-
I watched for that matter the decisive Algeria-Egypt qualifiers late last year and in my opinion the Algerian players were up to the mark and fully deserved their qualification for the 2010 world cup contest.
-
Echorouk : What about the Algeria squad’s performance versus the indomitable team of England?
-
Grobblar : Frankly speaking, I was greatly surprised at the Algerian players’ play style and their potent defensive line.
-
They put up a stiff resistance in the face of the English strikers who dismally failed to score no goal despite their great potentialities.
-
Echorouk : What are according to you the weak and strong points of the Greens of Algeria?
-
Grobblar : Well, the Algerian defense line is a potent one. This is an obvious fact but what is glaringly lacking in the Algeria line-up is an efficient attacking line with seasoned strikers who could score goals at any moment of a match. This could be a liability for the Algeria squad because scoring goals always remains a prerequisite for carrying the day.
-
Echorouk : Given your laudable experience as one of the top goalkeepers in the world, how do you assess the performance of Algerian goalkeeper Mbolhi during the grueling fixture versus England?
-
Grobblar : Actually, Mbolhi has a remarkable potential and fulfilled his task efficiently by stopping several dangerous shots by the English players. With more self-confidence and motivation, he could be even better in the next fixture versus the USA.
-
Echorouk : Do you think that the new Algerian goalkeeper Mbolhi has the required ability to play in the English first-league championship as suggested by some sport commentators?
-
Grobblar : Yes, I guess that in view of his prowess and resourcefulness displayed during the Algeria- England fixture, Mbolhi could play in England with much success if he is given the opportunity to do so.
-
Echorouk : Finally, according to you, what national team is more likely to wrench the 2010 world cup trophy?
-
Grobblar : We are still in the early stages of the competition but for me the 2 national squads who could finally vie for the trophy are Argentina and Germany. But life will tell!
