Cheb Mami: “Life behind bars, and then … the future projects”
Alone in an individual cell in the prison of Melun, a historic building flanked on the river Seine, the detained Algerian singer Cheb Mami pondered a lot on his woeful mishap which befell him all of a sudden following the much-publicized legal affair involving him with his former French companion Isabelle Seimoun and his close collaborators including his former shifty manager Levy. This imprisonment has drastically changed his life for the better.
- This affair led him to be imprisoned since July 2009 in France but owing to the unflagging efforts of his defense lawyer and his good behaviour in detention, Cheb Mami is now on the verge of being release on parole shortly.
- Echorouk’s special envoy to France met this week with Cheb Mami’s defense lawyer Mr Lasber who confirmed in a statement to our newspaper the projected release from prison of Cheb Mami pending a final judicial ruling which is expected to be issued on October 12th.
- Cheb Mami who has already spent 25 months in prison, that is half of the sentence inflicted upon him by the French justice, has recently introduced a request for a release on parole pointing to his right to parenthood as he is the father of a little boy.
- Furthermore, Cheb Mami’s lawyer also confirmed the sending in July 2010 by the detained singer of a letter to French President Nicholas Sarkozy appealing for a presidential pardon.
- Mami’s clemency appeal is now under study, according to his defense lawyer.
