Children criminalized at the age of 10 in Algeria
Algerian justice minister Tayeb Louh Monday announced the opening of many workshops as part of justice system revision and improving judicial decisions.
Louh said judicial authority independence mechanisms will be supported and collective and individual liberties will be reinforced.
Sanctions against kidnappers were stepped up and criminals can not benefit from reduced sentences. New measures were taken to protect minors such as determining specific age to prosecute children on charges as part of international accords signed by Algeria. Criminal children who are 10 and more will be prosecuted.
Louh also said changes were made to countersmuggling law as sanctions will be doubled if smuggling networks work with drug smugglers. Some provisions were adapted to international accords issued by the United Nations (UN), the African Union or the Arab League. Some crimes were introduced in terror category.
Asked about the Sonatrach corruption scandal, the justice minister said he can not make any comment.
