Coast guards chase illegal immigrants in Algeria

Coast guards Friday arrested 8 people who were about to leave Algeria’s eastern coasts to reach the Italian island Sardinia, Echorouk has learnt.

  • The coast guards had chased the illegal immigrants for about four hours in territorial waters. They were on three boats. Of them, 28 run away towards Sardinia, according to the same sources.
  • The operation started at about 1 am when 36 people gathered in Lacarob Beach. They agreed to pay 60,000 to 80,000 DZ to buy the three boats and engines.

  • When the coast guards caught them, two boats had already left the area. The third boat was surrounded after it had been chased by the guards. The illegal immigrants burnt it so that the coast guards will not seize it.

  • They were arrested and undergone medical tests. They were introduced to the prosecuting attorney who summoned them.
  • This immigration attempt has been the first of its kind for about a year.
