Corruption stifles Algerian ports
Ports of Algeria noticed distorted views of cars seized by customs services, because of bureaucracy and favouritism, which damaged the image of the country in a way that pushed the Organization of World Ports to close the largest ports of Algeria.
- Four ministries share the running of the ports of Algeria, the Ministry of Transport represented in the management of the ports, in charge of securing and storing the imported goods. The Finance Ministry represented by the General Directorate of Customs, in charge of the collection of customs duties. The Trade Ministry represented by the services of control and repression of fraud, in charge of controlling the imported goods, finally, the Interior Ministry, represented by the Borders Police, responsible for preventing entry of prohibited materials and investigate on criminal violations that may occur at the level of the ports.
- Despite the presence of these services at the Algerian ports, but the phenomenon of bureaucracy and favouritism, become a daily reality before the ayes of everyone, without any resistance from the authorities charged with combating the phenomenon, except in certain cases, and the clients of the port find themselves at the mercy of “gangs” operating out of law rules.
- Thus, it is not surprising when Algerian ports turn to bazaars offering scarce commodities, spare parts, and construction machinery with imaginary prices, and the cause is clear and simple “ghosts traders” are vampires happy when others suffer, who refuse to keep up with practices beyond the laws in ports.
