The Director General of National Security (DGSN), Major General Abdelghani Hamel, said that Algeria, which has a pioneering experience in the sustained fight against violent extremism and terrorism, is fully aware that the absolute elimination of all terrorist groups is not an small endeavor”.

Mr Abdelghani Hamel, stated  in a speech delivered on Wednesday during the 40th Arab Congress  bringing together  Arab police and security chiefs in Tunis (Tunisia) , that Algeria “will remain ready as usual to share  with her brotherly Arab partners all the initiatives designed to combat and root out the nefarious scourge of terrorism and violent extremism and will spare no effort to achieve this common objective”.

Major General Hamel also stressed that “developing and strengthening the states’  capacity to combat crime and terrorism  must go through the police forces’ efficient and regular training  notably by providing them with the required potential and the necessary means in order to allow them  to carry out their missions at best, within the framework of the laws and in respect for human rights”.

He added that “deterrence operations alone are not enough, if the latter aren’t not coupled with firm and staunch actions aimed at stamping out the roots of terrorism and violent extremism, at all levels”.

Major General Hamel further underlined to this effect that the Tunis conference “comes at a critical time as some Arab countries are now facing dire security challenges which could spawn, he said, adverse repercussions in terms of stability and security for most countries in the region, notably with the creeping growth of extremism, terrorism and organized crime, thus posing a serious threat to the stability of countries and to the safety of their citizens”.
