Emir Abdelkader's departure into exile commemorated in Ghazaouet

TLEMCEN (Algeria)- Cultural events were organized Saturday in Ghazaouet to mark the 163rd anniversary of the departure into exile, under French occupation, of Emir Abdelkader, the founder of the modern Algerian state.

In this respect, a ceremony was held at the initiative of Emir Abdelkader Foundation.

The participants, including researchers and intellectuals interested in national heritage, revisited “Emir’s final steps from Dar Esselah (Arms House), where he spent his last night before he left for exile from the port of Ghazaouet (Tlemcen, 540 km west of Algiers), on board of French ship “l’Asmodée,” towards the French port of Toulon.

At the of Ghazaouet, speakers underlined the circumstances surrounding that event, mentioning conditions the Emir imposed on occupation authorities concerning his choice of the land of exile.
