FFS leader: Algeria Constitution should be revised

Leader of the Socialist Forces Front (FFS) Hocine Ait Ahmed called for electing a Constituent Assembly to pave the way for a new constitution and new elections meant to reconstruct institutions.

• In a letter to the Algerian people, the exiled leader said a national debate should be reactivated with the participation of all the competences so that the “country will not find itself always between the choosing between civil war plague and political or religious dictatorship cholera.”

• Ait Ahmed believes that the phase of concretising a “peaceful and democratic” alternative is conducted firstly through popular and political mobilisation of the Algerian people. The second step will include all electoral events which would lead to the reconstruction of institutions.

• The new constitution, says Ait Ahmed, will result from a Constituent Assembly freely elected by independent Algerians. “They will be the first free Algerians in reality. Concerning those who will pass away, their efforts and sacrifices will not be in vain.”

• The FFS’ leader said anti-violence protests have broken the fear wall even if they could not topple the regime. They contributed in shedding light on its failure. “A march means that a committed society moves deeply and not just running in down town.”

• “It is useless to lie on ourselves by not being aware that the fear wall was replaced by annoyance and revulsion wall. False elites submitted because of terror, political financial mafia and rigged elections.”

• Ait Ahmed called on Algerian authorities to learn from the popular revolutions in the Arab countries. “They showed to the world the cruelty of crazy dictators who do not see themselves obliged to answer for their people.”

• He believes that the Algerian crisis is naturally part of the current crises. “Yet, it is impossible to submit to any democratic contamination in explaining and treating any national situation.”

• “If the Egyptian and Tunisian popular mobilisation reminds us of the Democratic Spring 1989-1991, the terrible massacre perpetrated by Gaddafi reminds us of the fierce eradication in the 1990’s which had incited Algerians against each other for a decade,” said the FFS’ leader.
