First section of Algiers tramway operational
The first section of Algeria’s tramway linking between Bordj Elkiffan and Hai Al Maouz in eastern Algiers was operational Sunday in presence of members of cabinet and senior officials.
- The section includes three stations along 7.2 km. The tram can carry 10,000 to 15,000 people.
- The works of this project started in late 2007. The tramway starts working at 6 a.m until 9 p.m. Ticket price is estimated at 20 DZ.
- The project is achieved by Alstom French company. It is in charge of the civil engineering, platform, rails, electrification, signalling, the workshop-depot and the centralized control point.
- The project is part of the development programme initiated by the Algerian government in response to a growing demand for public transport.
