The government will not allow Algerians with dual citizenship living abroad to enter the country only if they get a visa from its embassies.

The decision will be implemented starting from January 1st as Algerian authorities will ban an exception which used to be granted, according to a news website.

People with dual citizenship will have to get a visa from the Algerian embassy in the countries where they live. Border guards are ordered to check passports.

The same source said the new procedure is part of security measures in borders, ports and airports.

Unofficial figures show that around 5 million Algerians have dual citizenship. They represent 14.5 percent of Algeria’s population. They are living in four big countries: France, Canada, Spain and Germany, according to diplomatic sources.

A total of 3.5 million Algerians have French citizenship followed by 950,000 who have Canadian citizenship.
