Haftar asked Chadli to help him to topple Gaddafi

When the president hang up, he told me : « the Colonel wants to send Libyan aircrafts to shell Kasr Skhairat in support of the so-called Free Officers. »

« I am sure that the Colonel does not even have a map to see where the Royal Place is located, » he added.

Chadli Bendjedid ignored the fact that Colonel Gaddafi tried to seize the opportunity of tension between Algeria and Morocco. The latter tried to get united with Rabat in August 1984.

In mid-1980’s, a Libyan general called Khalifa Haftar contacted the Algerian president Chadli Bendjedid. He asked him for support in his coup against Gaddafi.

When the Free Officers toppled Libya’s King Idris Senoussi, Algeria presided by Houari Boumediene did not inteference in the country’s domestic affairs.

The King who had Algerian origins was in vacation in Turkey. This event showed Algeria’s position in non interference in internal affairs.

Algeria deals positively with the new regime in Libya which was considerably popular.
