Algeria’s war veterans described former French President François Hollande’s remarks about Harkis as a “punishment for traitors who have never been first degree French citizens.”

Secretary General of the National Organization for War Veterans’ Sons Mebarek Khalfa said Hollande’s remarks are part of preparation for France’s presidential elections. “Yet, they are a good lesson for those who betray their country.”

Hollande recognized the responsibility of French governments in abandoning the Harkis.

Spokesman for Algeria’s RND party Hussein Khaldoun said the position of his party is clear towards those who chose French nationality and joined France.

“Hollande’s remarks are part if his attempts to use Harkis in his new race to reach the President’s office,” he told Echorouk.

Leader of Algeria’s FNA Moussa Touati said Hollande’s remarks embody coded messages to the current generation.

“Hollande wanted to say that his government will not abandon its agents,” he added.
