An international forum on the reality of psychologists and practitioners in Algeria revealed on the miserable situation of this category of workers, as 69% of them do not have offices to exercise their profession in the public sector.

Speakers at the annual meeting organized by the National Assembly for Developing Research in Psychology “SARP” said that integration of psychologists in work immediately after graduation is a danger on public health, because configuration received by specialists at the university is not enough and it is theoretical rather than practical because professors themselves did not exercise this profession.

Head of the union of psychologists Khaled Keddad provided figures to show the extent of sufferance of this category saying that Algeria counts 1231 clinical psychiatrics, 196 in psychiatric medicine. This specialization does not exist in 28 Algerian provinces, as men represent 10.30% of specialists, while women represent 89.69%, according to statistics by the Ministry of Health and Population, declared on last April.

“Psychiatrics represent 40.11% in the ministerial sectors, mostly in the Justice Ministry 18.28%, the Ministry of National Solidarity 12.06% and the Ministry of Youth and Sports 11.90%”.
