Khalifa got 5 percent from each transaction
Algeria’s billionaire Rafik Abdelmoumene Khalifa spent Khalifa Airways’ money on luxury facilities for his employees and family causing bakruptcy. He also benefited from 5 percent from each transaction conducted by his group, according to Le Jeune d’Afrique website.
Ten suspects appeared in a court in Paris for being involved in the Khalifa case. Main Suspect Abdelmoumene was absent as Algeria did not extadite him to France.
Khalifa’s former wife Nadia Amirouche and employees were among the suspects accused of embuzzlemnt and bankruptcy.
The court’s judge said 13 appartments in affluent areas in Paris were rented for senior officials and Khalifa’s friends.
Former General Director of Khalifa Airways Sakina Taibi told the judge Khalifa rented a luxurious flat in an affluent area in Paris in at 3,860 euros per month.
She was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Algerian justice. An arrest warranted was issued for her in 2003 after she had run away to France.
His husband was also working at Khalifa Airways.
Vice-president of Khalifa Bank in Algiers Karim Smail said he benefited from a rented appartment in Paris in June 2001 before he had been granted another house bought by Khalifa Group at 909.700 euros.
He was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Algerian justice.
« We did not ask questions about expenses. I always travelled for free and I received orders from my boss at Khalifa Group, » he told the French court’s judge.
