Ramtane Lamamra, Algeria's foreign minister

Algerian foreign minister Ramtane Lamamra Friday said countering terrorism and extremism needs a multidimensional approach and respect of human rights.

“In addition to consultation and information exchange, countering terrorism needs a multidimensional approach to eliminate it. My country which suffered terror was able to defeat it and overcome the crisis. It is ready to share its experience with all the partner countries,” Lamamra said suring the 13 Conference of Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Western Mediterranean Countries (5+5) in Marseilles.

Speaking to his French, Spanish, Italian, Maltese, Portugese, Moroccan, Tunisian, Libyan and Mauritanian counterparts, the minister said there is also a need to ban financial resources to terrorism.

“Paying ransom is a funding source for terrorism,” he said.

“Because of that, we need to work together on funding more efficiently to detect suspicious money transfers. Hate and extremist discourses should be fought as well,” he added.

Lamamra also evoked the Libyan issue, saying the national consensus government has international legitimacy and it is the Libyan people’s exclusive representative to the international community.

“It needs everyone’s support so that it would be able to establish its legitimate power on all over Libya. There is no other possible solution in this country but a political one,” he said.

“I can say that we all agree that the Libyan conflict can be solved by a political solution only as part of the respect of national sovereignty and the Libyan people’s unity,” he added.
