Lawyers threaten to go on strike over a draft law
A number of young lawyers from the Algiers lawyers association gathered with members of the Union as well as other veterans here in Algiers to discuss the draft law governing their profession that will be forwarded to the parliament over the coming few days.
- The meeting that brought together yesterday a large number of lawyers wound up with a firm resolution that they will go on an all-out strike if the draft law is endorsed by the parliament, Echourouk , has learnt.
- The Union’s member, Lekhlef Cherif has indicated that the draft law should not only be revised but simply withdrawn so as to prepare another text drawn by the lawyers in various general assemblies countrywide, in a move to give the opportunity for all lawyers to express their view on the matter.
- M Chaib Seddik has indicated that this draft law contradicts the constitutional right for defence contending that provision N°24 gives the latitude for the public prosecutor to expel a lawyer from the courtroom and disbar him in case of wrongdoing.
