Secretary-General of Algeria Labour Party Louiza Hanoune called upon President Bouteflika to accelerate the comprehensive political reforms he announced and begin implementation immediately, along with the election of a constituent council.

“Danger is close; however, there is no revolutionary path in Algeria. Time for revolution cannot be predicted”, Louiza Hanoune says here on Tuesday during a press conference at the party’s headquarters.

“The Five-year Plan, economic and social reforms by government is useless, if not accompanied by comprehensive political reforms. There is a flagrant contract between the president’s efforts and archaic institutions that contributed in destroying the country, including the Chambers of Parliament. There should be prior legislative elections to establish a constituent council that can amend constitution”, she added.

“There is a clear contradiction between the new orientations towards reform and the elected institution and administration due to their inability to keep pace with the protest movements and the growing protests and demands by various groups. Majority of people regained initiative, but the political framework is still old and outdated and cannot lead us to a solution for the crisis. Part of the current political movement is sterile, while the remaining part contributes to the enrichment of debate and is trying to find a way out of the situation through effective reforms”.

“Current parliament is not eligible for this process, because it is the result of the national tragedy and one-party system. There should be a broad discussion within the community to correct the errors, starting with the adoption of a constituent council based on solid basis that can break with the one-party system. There is no revolutionary path in Algeria, and no one knows when it would erupt because Algerians are different. There is a social movement and government should respond to its demands”.
