Madjer to Echorouk: “I won't refuse the call to duty by coaching again the Algeria squad”
Rabah Madjer

The former Algerian football star, Rabah Madjer, has said in an interview with “Echorouk” that he will not turn his back to the call to duty if he is requested to coach again the Algerian national football squad as a matter of principle.

  • Echorouk : What is your overall assessment of the Greens’ performance during the first round of the world cup tournament?
  •
  • Madjer : Well, I should say that the players of the national squad did their best during this tournament.
  •
  • They displayed a rather good performance but they failed to go through to the second round of the competition because of the potency and experience of their opponents in the same group.
  •
  • Echorouk : But according to many sports commentators, the level during this world cup is rather fair to middling, to be honest … What is your comment?
  •
  • Madjer : It’s true; but we are now in the second phase of the competition and the level of play will be certainly more interesting as the various teams are advancing to the quarter-finals.
  •
  •  Several national squads who were falsely deemed as “weak” proved the opposite by snatching their ticket to the second round and also to the quarter-finals.
  •
  • During this 2010 world cup contest, we witnessed many surprises due to the steady evolution of football in many countries.
  •
  • Echorouk : What drawbacks, according to you, prevented the Greens of Algeria to secure a berth in the second round?
  •
  • Madjer : Our players obviously lacked an efficient striking line and some bravado and daring in their opponents’ defense perimeter in order to score goals.
  •
  • This could have allowed them to carry the day and thus advance to the second round of the competition, notably during the first match versus Slovenia where the players’ task was much easier than versus England and the USA.
  •
  • Echorouk : Don’t you think that the coach’s tactical scheme was not up to the mark?
  •
  • Madjer : Actually, I respect the national coach and his collaborators from the entire technical staff and I don’t want to indulge in a damaging polemics about the national coach’s own choices.
  •
  • I should lay the emphasis on one point: The Greens’ disqualification in the first round was obviously due to their inefficient scoring ability.
  •
  • The defenders and the midfielders did their job properly contrary to the strikers who totally missed the mark during the three Group C matches, to put it bluntly.
  •
  • Echorouk : Are you for or against the maintaining of Rabah Saâdane as national team coach in the light of the Greens’ performance in this world cup?
  •
  • Madjer : With my due respect to the readers of the newspaper Echorouk, I don’t want to reply to this sensitive question.
  •
  • Echorouk : Presently, there is as you may have heard a unanimous call by the football lovers in Algeria on you to coach once again the national football squad. Are you ready to respond to this call by taking up again with the coaching job at the helm of the Algeria line-up?
  •
  • Madjer : I should warmly thank all those who thought of me for this rewarding task. But for the moment I have received no official offer to this effect from the relevant authorities (the FAF federation and the Youth and Sports Ministry).
  •
  • But I should say that if they really want me to coach the national football team in a serene and professional framework they know where to find me and my mobile phone is always on.
