Man threatens to set himself on fire at UK consulate in Algiers

An Algerian man threatened to protest next to the British consulate in Algiers and set himself on fire because the UK authorities and their consulate did not allow him to come back to Northern Ireland.

  • Hadal Abdelaziz is married with an Irish woman and has three children. They have lived in Belfast for six years since he was deprived of familial rally. In 2004, he was surprisingly deported from Southern Ireland to settle his legal situation and get permanent residence.

  • He said he went to the British consulate in Tunisia in May 2005 and paid visa fees but his application was rejected. After his appeal, he benefited from a judgment to allow him entering Ireland within 14 days to see his children. Yet, the decision was not implemented for unknown reasons.

  • Hadal says he has tried to see the consul for three times but in vain. He contacts his family through Facebook, Skype and webcam.

  • He said he lives in despair because he feels lonely without his wife and children. He received a reply from the International Federation for Human Rights which he introduced to social affairs and immigration section.
