MPs propose a finding fact panel to investigate on food soaring prices

38 MPs have proposed establishing a parliamentary finding fact panel to investigate on the food crisis which shook the country early this year and sparked riots countrywide, Head of the Finance Commission at the Parliament, Mohamed Kenai said.

  • M.Kenai told Echoroukonline that the proposal has been submitted to the parliamentary commission which is to propose it, in return, in less than a week from now, for approval to the National People’s Assembly (APN). He further specified that the article 161 of the Constitution endorses members of the Parliament to establish finding fact panels to investigate on any issue.
  • Once approved, the panel would be composed of 15 MPs of different parties represented at the Parliament. It would conduct an investigation on defects and factors that provoked the sudden shortage of milk and the soaring prices of mass-market foodstuff, such as oil and sugar, in the local market.
  • The members of the panel would have the right to hear all the concerned parties, including ministries of Commerce, Agriculture, and Finance, in addition to the Tax body, Customs, importers, distributers and the National Milk Office (ONAL).
  • At the end of the investigation, the parliamentary finding facts panel would elaborate a report, which to be made public, either thoroughly or partially.  The report would determine the parties responsible for the crisis, and then, it is for Justice to decide on this case.
